Feeling crafty? Want custom figure flats that look *exactly* like your character?

All you need is a little imagination, some scissors, some cardstock, a printer, and some glue.

First, use this website to design a character picture, or have your players design their own:

This website is fairly universal, and covers multiple genres from fantasy to science fiction to modern day to horror to superheroes. The only thing it can't really do well is truly bizarre anatomy, as everything more or less has to be humanoid. There are options for centaurs, snake-body, and so forth, however.

Take a screen shot (usually just by hitting Print Screen on your keyboard) and open up some image editing software. Must computers these days have some pre-installed image editing software, like MS Paint or MS Picture Manager.

Paste your screen shot into the image editor, and crop it down until it just shows the picture of the character, and save it.

Using MS Word (or some other word processing program), create a table with borders that has one row and four columns. Set the column width to be 1 inch, and the row height to be 1.5 inches. I use a 1 inch width because that's the default size for most RPGs.

Paste your character picture into the first three rows of the table, making sure to re-size the picture if need be to get it to fit within the cell dimensions.

If you want to get fancy, you can flip one of the middle images so that they're facing each other, and set the image in the first column to grayscale. The first column represents the back of the figure, so making it grayscale sets it apart to be easily identified as such.

So, your document should look something like this:



Print the figure flats on cardstock, and cut them out. Fold along the column borders, and glue the blank column to the back of the first column, and let them dry.

Viola! Figure flats that are identical to your player's characters.

I've used Hero Machine before, and though it's a bit limited, it's very good for a quick custom job. Nice work!

It's also good if you want a character picture but have no artistic talent.

Of course, some character concepts are going to be so bizarre that computerized paper dolls simply won't have enough options to make the character properly.

In most cases, however, there are enough options that a player can get close enough to, if not right on their character concept.

Also, since you're taking a screen shot, you can further alter the image by erasing some parts that don't fit, and so on. I did that with one NPCs picture. The hat I chose has a feather attached to it. Such frivolity doesn't fit the character, so I erased it.

Have you played around with the other versions of Hero Machine? They've got one for pin-up girls, rock stars, and a v3.0 that is still being worked out.

I've tinkered a little bit with some of them. The Zombie maker would be good for War of the Dead!

I've tried 3.0, but IMO it's more complicated than it needs to be for my purposes.

I also like Hero Factory (Fabrica de Herois). It's a good balance between Hero Machine 2.5 and Hero Machine 3, but it has the major disadvantage of being in Portuguese.

Yeah I Downloaded and saved an old free version 10 years ago and use it all the time and then mod a bit with photoshop.

Heromachine is not bad, but I prefer the style of drawing of this site:

More body types and a more comics-like style. But preference is, of course, completely subjective.

And I would probably make the figures as flats, cutting the white space around, like I do on my own figures:

I just made this one quickly to give you an idea of how it can make quite exotic concepts. I didn't took the time to use the colors settings, but, you can color the drawings as you make them.
