I apologize if that has been answered before, I did try to search for it first before asking.
If a caster uses the Fear power in Deadlands: Reloaded, does the local Fear Level apply as an negative modifier to the Guts check (and a positive modifier on the Fright Table)?
Suppose an evil cultist casts Fear and gets a raise in an area where the Fear Level is 3, against a character with a Grit of 2. Would the modifier on the Guts roll be -3 (-2 from caster's raise, +2 from grit, -3 from Fear Level) and the modifier on the Fright Table be +5 (+2 from caster's raise, +3 from Fear Level)?
This is how I ruled in my game, but it seems pretty harsh and makes Fear as a power really dangerous (but then again, perhaps that is the point).

Partially correct. Fear Level and Grit affect all Guts rolls, but Fear Level does not act as a "monster's fear penalty" as per the core Fear rules (page 100 of SWEX) for rolling on the Fright Table like other penalties to Guts do not apply to that roll.
So in the above case, the Guts roll would be at -3 as listed, but the modifier on the Fright Table would be 0 (neither the raise nor Grit nor Fear Level affect it). _________________ Clint Black
