Hey all
I'm looking for an "official" martial arts and maybe improved martial arts. The only one I have handy is from the day after Ragnarok, and it seems a mite overpowered- no gang up bonus against the character at level 1 (and something else- dont have the book in front of me) and level 2 adds dex to unarmed combat damage.
Any suggestons?
Thanks

Well, there are a lot of "official" versions and unofficial versions, and most of them work differently because martial arts is one of those things that can vary significantly in how it works depending on the specific setting.
If DaR seems overpowered for your needs, then I'd guess the Deadlands version is right out.
Probably the best thing would be to lob a question back and ask what kind of setting are you looking to use it in and what would be the prominence in the setting?
If it's just a case of general use or something with a bit of flexibility, it's not exactly "official," but you might check out Modern Martial Arts here...

Another reason why at least Unarmed Warrior from Modern Martial Arts should be "core," if not the whole thing. It's a great unofficial supplement. _________________ ***** HawaiianBrian / getsavaged.blogspot.com ***** |

| I've also noticed that supplement and it's great. At the same site is also Agents of Oblivion, which also has unarmed combat edges, and at least part of which are a bit different. think it would be confusing to add them both. Which ones you think are more fitting, fun, useful / balanced? |

Thanks all- I suppose the background would have been helpful....
We're in a Gi-Joe-inspired Strike Force 7 game. My character is the combination Wheelman/hand to hand guru. He's a decent (d shot, but is much better at hand-to-hand (D10). I have the Acrobat & Dirty Fighter edges.
I'm about to get another raise: I'm between the Really Dirty Fighter or Martial Artist edge. I didn't really have a problem with Martial Artist, as portrayed in Day After Ragnarok, but I'm willing to bet my GM will.
I'll look at the other resources.

That doesn't sound overpowered to me. Consider:
1. The Block Edge gives you +1 Parry all the time. This Edge, by negating gang-up bonuses, effectively gives you even more Parry... but only some of the time (you need to have 3+ opponents on you at once in order to do better than Block, and how often does that happen? sometimes, sure, but not always like with Block).
2. Str+Agility unarmed damage is nice, but for the price of an Edge, that's expensive, when most people can just pick up a sword for practically free from the armory and deal as much damage. The nice thing is that you can't be disarmed and considered an Unarmed Defender, which I think is probably worth an Edge.
3. Is the Agility damage capped by Strength like a normal melee weapon? If not, then that might be overpowered (since there are few other ways to improve melee damage than being stronger). But if it's capped at Str+Str like other weapons than it is no better than them and should not be unbalancing. So if you need to house-rule it that's how I'd do it.
4. Don't forget about the possibility of increasing Fighting to d12. That gets you +1 to Parry and greater likelihood of a raise on the attack roll. It's just another thing to compare these Edges to, when considering balance.

For some reason, this nagged at me and I finally figured it out. Check out the SW errata for DaR.
http://www.atomicovermind.com/previews/DAR_SW_Errata.pdf
Martial Artist allows a character to ignore 1 point of Gang Up, not all Gang Up bonuses (the other effect being that the character counts as armed when unarmed).
Might make the difference with the GM. _________________ Clint Black

Deadlands reloaded, and the supplement the flood have a great ma system. However the deadlands MA edge is just as bad. It makes you count as armed, and negates gang up completely, on the other hand it requires more edges to increase damage unlike DaR.
Deadlands requires you take an arcane background to learn a specific style of fighting. If you really wanted you could drop the arcane background deadlands requires in exchange use 2 edges to represent MA training for the armed bonus & negate gang up then move into the styles that give a specific bonus not just extra damage. You would need the flood to really flesh out specific maneuvers and progresses the styles.
Some settings break the ma edge into 2 edges, but I am not to sure it is over powered to keep them in 1 edge. The gang up mod is really the big deal. If the player really wanted they would use a weapon to negate the bare handed penalty, and the results can be just as good. I just limit the # of people that can take any given edge, and that usually results with 1-2 guys who are really good at combat and the rest of the party fills other roles.
of note: work really picked up when i was writting this. I am sorry for the poor english. |

How about negating 1 gang up bonus at Novice, 2 at Seasoned, etc.?

Iron Dynasty will include new and updated material as well. _________________ Kristian
