Not sure if this topic has been brought up (if it has I apologize), but I could not find any info with my forum search on Movement in 'How the Core Rules Work'. If someone could point me in the right direction to my question I would be most happy.
Is there a difference between Vehicle Movement inches and Character Movement inches?
I’ve scratched my head over this and something is not adding up here. If a character inch equals 2 real world yards… does a vehicle inch equal the same? For example your average character (without any edges or arcane help) can run 9 to 10 table top inches per round or 20 yards in 6 seconds. Now take a Compact Car with Acc/TS of 10/36. I could possible see an average joe catching up and perhaps grabbing a hold of this particular car taking off from a stand-still in the first round (6 sec). Now once this car gets to its top speed of 36”/round what does that equate to in actual real world speed? I don’t think even the fastest person alive should be able to catch a compact car at top speed. When I figured out what 36”/round equals I come up with a real world speed of 24.55 mph. (The fastest person alive can run around 21 mph or so.) Anywho, 24.55 mph can’t be right? If not please show me. More than likely I’m seeing this all wrong.
Now if my math is correct what is the conversion or point at which Character Speed and Vehicle Speed separate?
The key here is that vehicle movement is adapted for the battlefield. As noted under Acc/Top Speed (on page 54 of SWEX)...
"The Top Speed of vehicles is set for battlefields (not the open highway, where they can usually double their speed). More importantly, they’re adapted to work well on the table-top. This means they’re not entirely realistic, but work well for the game."
So, yep, they are the same inches, but the vehicle stats are combat stats for speeds in battle. It still works pretty well; even the fastest person (Fleet Footed) with a maximum run of 18" will never catch a car moving at a top speed of 36".
Hope that helps. _________________ Clint Black
