In round two, I get hit by an opponent, and while it hurts, I don't have to be concerned with disruption (but I do wish I spent the benny to try for a raise on that armor Spellcasting roll).
In round four, I decide to maintain armor because bad guys won't stop hitting me, and since there's a sniper taking pot shots at me, I cast deflection (with a -1 on my Spellcasting roll).
Later in round four, I'm hit again. It's not enough to get past my armor (can't believe the loser rolled a three), but I do have to succeed at a Spellcasting roll (TN 3) if I don't want to drop Armor. I roll a two (which leads me to respect my opponent's three), and I'm out of bennies. This means Armor is gone, but since I'm not yet maintaining deflection, that spell is still good to go (which is a good thing since that sniper is gonna shoot at me on the next card).

You only have to roll if the character is Shaken or wounded by damage. The damage has to do enough to affect them to require rolling against it.
