I doubt that you are in the minority. I have never heard anyone here say anything negative against Low Life. As a matter of fact, my copy is inbound in the mail as we speak. Smile

I agree, from what I've seen, the book is a work of art.

Well, SWEX is an update of the older rules, which no licensee had a direct hand in creating (not that I could see in the original beige book credits, anyway) Very Happy. A few of us helped revise the rules for SWEX, though, but we were all PEGgers at that time.

Clint, a PEG man still, co-wrote Necessary Evil. I worked for PEG full-time for four years before helping found Triple Ace Games, Dave Blewer wrote Sundered Skies (and is now at TAG) and Rob Elliott did a lot of design work for PEG's setting books (and is now at TAG).

That said, every licensee I know of has two important assets that really matter---professionalism and a desire to make SW as popular as possible through cool and innovative settings. I don't think you'll see any difference in scope, imagination, quality, or attention to detail between licensee and PEG products when you get round to branching out into the licensee stuff.

Im a huge fan of Rippers and Soloman Kane. I also ran a short game in Forgotten Realms using just the Explorer Edition rules and the free Warriors and Wizards download. That played great. You really can't go wrong......

Happy savaging!

Low Life isn't for everyone. It's been called a comedy game, but it's really not. It's full of puns, gross jokes, and absurdities, but it's not comedy. In fact, I think it's one of the best fantasy settings ever, mainly because it's so far removed from the usual tropes. And it has a theme, which as far as I can tell is Hope.

Setting is something rpgs do extreemly well. Theme, on the other hand, is often neglected, minimized, or distained as "fluff." However, Theme is what makes the setting revolve; it makes the world go 'round, as they say. And the thing that makes Mutha Oith go 'round is hope. So for all of its croachy crunchy stanky goosin' goofiness, it's a truly profound game.

And you can make some pretty sweet arse-kickers with the rulze.

I'm sure most/all of the settings are great, I just feel that it's important as to which one I get first. I'm already sure I'll pick up Low Life, but thanks for mentioning it!

Do you have a game group in place?

I just want to make sure I get the core interpretation down-pat before venturing into the individual interpretations of licensee products (not that there's anything wrong with it, I'm sure I'll enjoy their views once I get around to them).

Well, if you are using this as a basis...

... take a look in the Credits of SW:EX.

You will find, among others, a certain Sean Patrick Fannon there... Very Happy

Seriously, we've all worked very closely together, sharing ideas, and helping to make all Savage products both compatible and great.
