A little while back, I began a discussion on players being purely support characters. I tried this out on a purely conditional basis last night with a new player. The session involved a raid on an airbase, which was run as a mass battle. I had a group of elite troops waiting in ambush in a couple of aircraft hangers, hoping to give the PCs and their allies a bit of a challenge.

The guy in the van was prepared to wreak some havoc on the base control systems with the magic of his hacking abilities. By cutting the power to the base, destroying their communications, and looping AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" over the base intercoms, he was able to impose some serious penalties on the opposition's ability to organize a serious defense.

The real master stroke came when he decided to try and set off the fire sprinklers and other control systems. With ungodly exploding dice, he managed to set off everything on base. This included the two hangers where the intense fighting was meant to happen. Do you know what a fire control system in an aircraft hanger is? It involves sucking the all the oxygen out of the building. Scratch several elite troops.

In conclusion, the guy in the van is a definite keeper.

And, of course, you can "trace back" the Guy in the Van, so he can have some scary times, forced to act like a frontman hero, while his friends run back to try to help him! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

This could be a fantastic "twisted" adventure!

That's great. It's always satisfying when you can take a player's unusual character concept and make it work.

The ones I usually see involve AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF FOAM. Halon extinguishers and similar oxygen-removers are usually limited to server rooms and other places full of sensitive electronics.

Glad it's working out!

From the previous thread, are you keeping him accountable in some way, or are you just going to have some fun "now you're in trouble too AND alone in a van with no windows on most of its outside?" moments?

It sounds like it was great fun raining death and destruction from afar for all involved.

For fun twists, you can have a counter-hacker take him on (Hacker duel!), and like I had mentioned in the previous one, having a situation where he can play Morpheus and deftly maneuver the party around vastly powerful adversaries with his situational awareness supremacy. A great way to set that up is to have passive surveillance systems all that can be accessed (without at least a TN of 14 or something) in a given target.

Enjoy! Keep us posted of great stories from it too, we always likes to hear how a fun project like that's working out.

I really don't know for certain myself, but that's what my buddies in both the USAF and RAF told me. Forgive me for assuming they knew what they were talking about.

Yeah, brother-of-mine, I've actually always seen the BIG AMOUNTS OF FOAM fire extinguishing method for aircraft hangers. Here's a corporate website with some info and, if you'll notice, a picture of some kind of fighter jet covered in foam.

Besides, there is no way to make a hanger airtight. Really, there's not any way to make an above ground space that large airtight.

Sensitive electronics? Seems like there'd be plenty of that in a modern military hangar to me, and in the planes. I'm always amazed how much electronics are in everything nowadays.

Hrm, and I apparently am having image problems. Lovely.

Not quite the same thing, Dan.

And a oxygen-removal system big enough to cover a hangar, fast enough to put out a fire? Yikes!

Quite true, yes, it does seem quite impossible now.

Sounds like the actual application in the game was fun however, and plausible enough for a typical group though on the fly, which is what matters in the end.
stupid... image... grrr
