Royal Alchemists

Victorian England has embraced the “new” science of the age, especially Alchemy, which seems more sensible and scientific than crazy gizmos and giant mechanical men.  The Royal Engineers have set up a special school and send the most promising candidates to learn how to create and use special chemicals to use elixirs on the battlefield.

Royal Engineers

            A sign of development and military ingenuity, the Royal Engineers have a world-wide reputation for efficiency and skill in all the traditional engineering skills.

            The Royal Engineers also have a new, non-traditional role.  After the Awaking became apparent, the Queen asked that the Engineers become trained in the various means of defeating abominations and other “paranormal threats to the empire.”  Aside from their studies in Weird Science and Alchemy, the Royal Engineers were a natural choice because of their Ubiquitous nature.  They could be sent anywhere to investigate supernatural events under the ruse of regular engineering duties.

            The daughter of Lady Jane Franklin caused quite a scandal.  Instead of spending her time with properly screened suitors, she poured over the latest scientific texts.  With the help of a sympathetic uncle, she attended the finest scientific and engineering schools throughout England.  Her talents included Chemistry and Physics, as well as the newer study of Occult Engineering.  When her future fiancee was posted to North America, she caused further scandal by journeying to the new world and joining him on his “adventures.”
